If you are completely new to electrocardiography, I suggest you begin at the beginning and read each chapter in sequence. This isn't a novel, so take your time. Depending on your knowledge base and background, the material may be either a quick read or more time-consuming. I have made every attempt to simplify some of the more challenging aspects of electrocardiography, but some topics are more demanding than others. The basic science of the early chapters may be new for some readers, but have no fear, because you are going to become an excellent clinical electrocardiographer without a chemistry or physics degree.

The illustrations are plentiful, designed to enhance and supplement the written material. Make sure you review both the text and illustrations.

Throughout the book, you will find call-out paragraphs with little icons at the side. These are fun little notes that include topics for "history buffs" or "bookworms," who may enjoy a little more detail. Other notes are important for everyone and are identified as a "clinical tip" or a caution to "be careful."

Each chapter introduces a new subject, but deliberately reviews and builds on the previous topics. If you have ever studied music, you know that you need to keep practicing sections you have already mastered as you are learning the new material. When you finish your final lesson, you are prepared to render a virtuoso performance. As you proceed, test your knowledge by answering the questions at the end of each chapter. And for those interested in reading more about specific topics, resources are provided for further study.

Finally, just have fun. I'm confident you are going to enjoy being known as the local ECG expert!
