AB The  number  of  patients  with  heart  failure  is  growing.  End-stage  heart  failure  is  associated  with  significant  morbidity,  need  for  recurrent  hospitalizations,  decrease  in  quality  of  life,  and  increased  mortality.  Cardiac  transplantation  has  evolved  as  an  effective  therapy  for  many  of  these  patients.  Tremendous  advancements  in  the  fields  of  immunosuppression,  rejection,  and  infection  have  transformed  what  was  once  considered  an  experimental  intervention  into  a  routine  treatment  available  worldwide.
