Welcome to the second edition of Nuclear Cardiology: Practical Applications. The first edition was developed to provide a succinct and informative guide to indications for nuclear cardiology procedures as well as background on the testing procedures themselves and how to clinically use the results.

++

This edition reflects a substantial revision of our first. Many chapters have been reorganized and several topics combined to provide maximum understanding and clarity. We are pleased that we now offer color illustrations and figures.

++

Several new chapters have been added. This includes a chapter on radiation dosimetry and completely revised physics and instrumentation sections. Although this book is primarily intended to be practical and clinically useful, we have included chapters which delve into greater detail for the procedural aspects of contemporary nuclear cardiology. Chapters dealing with clinical disease states and the use of radionuclide cardiac imaging focus on diagnosis and risk stratification of patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease, evaluation of therapy, acute chest pain, and heart failure are all revised. This edition also -presents newer and emerging techniques in nuclear cardiology, which are currently available or are anticipated shortly, such as fatty acid and neurohumoral imaging, the use of hybrid technology, and cardiac positron emission tomographic (PET) imaging. Other cardiac imaging modalities are presented in completely reworked chapters in order to provide a perspective of nuclear cardiology's role in patient management. Additionally, a new chapter is included to quality initiatives in nuclear cardiology and the appropriate use of SPECT and PET procedures.

++

Although this volume is useful for all practitioners of nuclear cardiology, as well as those clinicians who refer for these procedures, we believe that is ideally suited for trainees, including cardiology fellows and radiology residents who seek information that is easy to understand and readily usable. To this end, we have included questions at the end of each chapter to aid in board review preparation, with the answers at the end of the book.

We thank our many colleagues who have provided vital material for this book which will once again allow Nuclear Cardiology: Practical Applications to be the most useful in our field. We as authors and editors are proud of our offering and hope that our readers find the content useful in their training and practice.
